An overnight bus from Innsbruck via the Brenner pass and Milan and I wake in Rome – fully aware I’ll only have 12 hours to explore this incredible city before taking the train to Civitavecchia for an onwards ferry to Barcelona. Top tip – night buses mean free sleeps. They’re a great way to save money while still getting places. Buses are also the best way to see a country – well, at least they are if you’re awake anyway. Check the many reasons why buses rule.
12 hours really isn’t nearly enough time for a city as beautiful as Rome. Luckily I’ve been here before but below are some pictures from this fleeting stopover in a city where a surprise lies around every corner. Obligatory photos – the Colosseum, Trevi fountain, Spanish Steps, sidestreets, sidestreet pizzerias, Arch of Constantine, Victor Emmanuel II monument, ancient Rome, a beggar outside the Colosseum, Rome train and bus stations – and Vespas. Nothing says Rome more than Vespas.
