I’ve been lucky enough to go paragliding with Tenerfly many times in the past (this was actually my fourth time flying with Tony) however I’ve never managed to do their longest flight from Izaña until now. Conditions on Tenerife vary wildly from season to season – particularly on the north side of the island – and, in the past, it just hasn’t been possible to go.
The Izaña route involves driving up and around Mount Teide (at 3715m, Spain’s highest mountain and also the third highest volcano in the world when taking into account that it rises around 7500m from the sea bed). The ride to the launch site takes about an hour – followed by a flight of approximately 35-40 minutes down to the tourist town of Puerto de la Cruz.
Unlike flights on the south side of the island, the ride down to Puerto de la Cruz involves a leisurely glide rather than using thermals to climb like some of the flying options on the south.
As with every other time I’ve been, there was a slight moment of trepidation before taking off – mainly through fear of falling and tripping on the run. It also didn’t help I was still sore from two successive days of kitesurfing at El Mdano and wakeboarding at Costa Adeje (which rather explains the super sketchy running).
Nonetheless we took off without issue then headed out towards sea above the clouds. Going through the cloud base was an unforgettable experience followed soon after by soaring high above Puerto de la Cruz out over the sea then heading back inland to land on the main beachfront at Puerto at sunset. Definitely one that will remain long in the memory.
