Getting from Madrid to the main ferry port at La Huelva is easy with a cheap and regular bus service going from the capital every day. The bus ride through rural Spain is enjoyable (it’s surprising just how empty this country is) while the ongoing ferry is a relaxing way to reach Tenerife and definitely more satisfying than simply flying. The Ferry Journey from La Huelva to Tenerife
The ferry journey from La Huelva to Tenerife offers a relaxing and scenic way to reach the Canary Islands. The crossing typically takes around 30 to 36 hours, depending on the ferry operator and sailing conditions. There are various cabin types, ranging from standard to deluxe, offering comfortable sleeping accommodations for overnight voyages. I personally opted for the seating option, then set up a ‘bed’ behind my seats. No one said a word.
Ferry schedules and prices vary depending on the season and the ferry company. It’s recommended to book tickets in advance, especially during peak travel periods, to secure preferred departure dates and cabin options. Prices for a one-way ferry ticket from La Huelva to Tenerife range from €100 to €200, depending on cabin selection and availability. The ferry I took had a bar, basic restaurant and outdoors sundeck complete with small pool. There was also a mini-party outside on the leg between Gran Canaria and Tenerife. I would think similar is offered on most services
Additionally, you can enjoy stunning views of Gran Canaria as the ferry stops here en route to Tenerife (at least mine did), adding a little extra to the journey. Overall, combining a bus journey from Madrid to La Huelva with a ferry voyage to Tenerife is a convenient and enjoyable way to first explore a little of Spain’s southern mainland before taking the onward ferry to the Canaries.
My route arrived at the capital of Tenerife, Santa Cruz, which is well connected by bus to all other parts of the island.
