Hidirlik Tower Antalya guide
Archaologists and historians alike remain unsure as to the original purpose of Hidirlik Tower however almost all agree it dates back to 1st/2nd Century AD and was almost definitely constructed by the Roman Empire which was prevalent in Antalya at the time. It’s widely believed the original construction was on a square foundation before later being changed to the current circular base.
Although the purpose of the original construction is up for debate, most historians believe it was likely first built as a tomb to a great leader (unknown) due to remnants of frescos on the interior walls and a further 12 axe motifs carved on the exterior, around the portal.
Since then, the tower has had various uses including being used as a lighthouse and a lookout tower/fortification for the trading harbour below. It may have also been used as a church for a time.
The Hidirlik Tower at sunset
Although it’s not possible to get inside the tower itself, the views here at sunset over Antalya’s harbour, cliffs and coast are second to none. As with much of Antalya and Kaleiçi, old mingles with new here and you’ll find various restaurants and pensions nearby – perfect for a sunset dinner or drink to take in the splendid vista. Note, many locals come here too to soak up the views and the area is always bustling as the sun goes down. Afterwards, take a walk into Kaleiçi to experience it’s busy, narrow streets – filled with bars and traders. This area is very popular at night and has some of Antalya’s best nightlife.

Essentials
Price – Free
Fitness – None required though the elderly / infirm may struggle with the steps down into Antalya harbour
Facilities – There are multiple bars and restaurants around the Tower
Opening hours – All day and night
Security & safety – you may feel slightly intimidated by the busy narrow streets but I personally didn’t see any trouble, even after a month of staying in this area. Just be sensible with your belongings and keep more valuable items close to your person. The gate and Old town are the sorts of places that possibly would attract pickpockets – but this applies to any popular tourist attraction. Also, police frequently patrol the narrow streets on motorbikes.
Night-time – the Tower is illuminated at night
