The memorial consists of 60 pairs of iron shoes, shaped in authentic 1940’s styling, shape and size to serve as a visual representation of the terror served on the city’s inhabitants regardless of age, gender or sex.
Approximately 20,000 Jews were executed by firing squad on the river banks in late 1944 and early 1945. As they faced toward the river, they were told to take off their shoes. Shoes were valuable during the war – more valuable than life in the eyes of the fascist Militia.
Men, women and children were shot on the river banks, their bodies then tumbling into the river to be swept away from memory. The tribute on riverside features high-heels, worker boots, mens’ dress shoes and tiny toddler pumps – all serving as reminder of the Militia’s cruel agenda.
The Shoes on the Danube Memorial can be found very near the Parliament building and serves as a moving reminder to the city’s checkered past.
I had less than 24 hours in Budapest due to very short onward travel connections but am very glad I visited. If you are in the city, you should take time to go and spare a few moments to think of the atrocities of the past.
